NPMA Announces Canine Insect Detection Division
To provide a forum for members who use dogs to detect a presence of insects, NPMA is partnering with the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA) to form the Canine Insect Detection Division. Canines have long been used for materials detection, such as drugs and explosives, and have been used for termite detection for over a decade. Recently, bed bug detecting dogs have gained popularity, and it is estimated that over one hundered insect detection canines are used in the United States.
Committee members include:
Mr. J. Louis Witherington, Falcon Termite & Pest Control, Inc. (Chair)
Mr. Shane James, James Pest Management, Inc. (Co-Chair)
Ms. Sara Hastie, Hunter Detection Services, Inc.
Dr. Phil Koehler, University of Florida/IFAS
Dr. Faith Oi, University of Florida/IFAS
Mr. Pepe Peruyero, J&K Canine Academy
Mr. Brian Taggart, A & C Exterminating Corporation
Mr. James S. Warneke
Mr. Greg Baumann, National Pest Management Association (Staff Liaison)
The first meeting of the group will take place at PestWorld 2009 in October at The Venetian Palazzo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

BEWARE OF FRAUDULENT CERTIFICATIONS!
It has been brought to NESDCA's attention, from NESDCA Members whose certifications have expired, that they are being contacted for certification of their Team. According to members contacted, the information consists of being mailed items to take the certification at the cost of hundreds of dollars, and certifying 4 times a year. NESDCA's Certification/K-9 Chairperson was forwarded this information and contacted Terry Fleck. Terry Fleck is considered a K-9 Case Law Expert for Law Enforcement K-9. He provides Legal Opinions and is a certified Expert Witness for K-9's involved in court cases in numerous States. More information can be found about Terry Fleck on the internet at www.k9fleck.org.
Mr. Fleck just wrote an article in K-9 Magizine regarding Certification and also returned the following information to NESDCA.
1. Paying hundreds of dollars for a certification is unheard of.
2. The standard for K-9 Certifications is annual.
3. It is IMPOSSIBLE to certify a Scent Detection Team WITHOUT seeing/watching the team complete the test in a environment that would typically be searched for the scent that the team is testing for. Therefore, the certification is NOT VALID.
4. Mr. Fleck also stated the person providing the certification cannot have ANY monetary interest, or conflict of interest, IE:vendor.
Just a note to current and future members; NESDCA's certification standards are mirrored from Law Enforcement Detection Standards with input from the University of Florida Entomology Department, which has been involved in reasearch of Entomology Scent Detection. NESDCA's only Board Member involved with dogs is the Certification/K-9 Chairperson who has no voting rights, and cannot certify Detection Teams. All Evaluators are current or retired Law Enforcement K-9 Evaluators, Trainers, and/or Handlers, and NESDCA requires two Evaluators for each certification.
NESDCA currently has several members with expired certifications as listed on the website. NESDCA Evaluators have been in contact with these members and the common denominator is scheduling issues. To ensure NESDCA remains a reputable and legitimate organization, these steps must be taken until those certifications are current.
Anyone with questions about certification or NESDCA may visit our website or contact us at nesdca@nesdca.com.
Thank you for your continued support of NESDCA.
